Career advisers play an important role in helping students explore public service careers, but it can be challenging to be a subject matter expert in every branch of government, every application process or every state system. That is where the Partnership can help!
Before meeting with a student, consider sharing our pre-appointment checklist. This tool is designed to help quickly identify where students are in their public service career exploration and connect them with the most relevant next steps and resources. This also allows them to show up to an advising appointment more prepared and aware of the government hiring process, saving you time and allowing them to maximize their appointment!
If a student is interested in public service but is not sure where to start
Some students know they want to make a difference but are still figuring out what kind of role, agency, issue area or level of government may be the best fit. In these conversations, it can be helpful to give students a way to explore public service careers by interest area, skill set or professional goal.
If a student is interested in federal government
Students interested in federal government may need support understanding the range of agencies, job series, eligibility requirements and application steps. Advisers do not need to know every detail of the federal hiring process, but reviewing a few key resources in advance can help make the appointment more concrete and action-oriented.

If a student is interested in state government
State government can be a strong fit for students who want to work on issues that directly affect communities, including education, transportation, health, housing, environment, technology and public safety. Because state hiring systems vary, students may benefit from guidance on how to explore opportunities and understand the application process in the state or states where they hope to work.
If a student is interested in California state government
California has its own hiring process, job classifications and exams, which can feel unfamiliar to students. If a student is specifically interested in working for the State of California, it is helpful to review California-specific resources before the appointment so you can help them understand where to begin.
If a student is looking for an internship
Internships can be one of the best ways for students to explore public service, build experience and clarify their career interests. Before an appointment, advisers can review available internship search tools and help students think through timing, eligibility, location, compensation and application materials.
