Native American and Tribal Communities

Native American and Alaska Native students bring important perspectives, lived experiences and community knowledge to federal service. Federal agencies work on issues that directly affect Tribal communities, including health care, education, environmental protection, infrastructure, housing, natural resources and economic development. Students interested in federal careers may also be eligible for specific hiring authorities and internship opportunities connected to Tribal-serving missions.

What is Indian Preference?

Many federal agencies offer internships, fellowships and early career opportunities connected to Tribal-serving work and Native communities. 

Indian Preference allows certain Native American and Alaska Native applicants to receive hiring preference for positions within specific federal agencies and offices, including the Indian Health Service , Bureau of Indian Affairs , Bureau of Indian Education  and select positions within the Office of the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs. 

Indian Preference does not apply to all federal jobs, so students should carefully review each job announcement for eligibility details and application requirements. Applicants claiming Indian Preference are generally required to submit Form BIA-4432, Verification of Indian Preference, as part of the application process.
